If scuba diving or snorkeling is your passion, Cairns will not disappoint. You’re going to want to spend as much time as possible exploring the Great Barrier Reef so a great way of maximising this is on a multi-day or overnight liveaboard dive boat from Cairns. What better way to wake up than to the calm of the open ocean, watching the sun rise over the reef on a morning dive or snorkel? It’s a well know fact that the early bird catches the worm and marine animals are often most active early in the morning, so an overnight stay is the best way of seeing the diverse Pacific ocean wildlife on offer.

The Great Barrier reef’s spectacular corals and marine life are second to none and the sooner you can visit, the better. Sadly, climate change is posing a serious threat to this coral reef and it may not always be available for us to feast our eyes on. This is why many of our Cairns boat tours offer informative commentary, educating about the reef and directing some focus towards how we can better protect our oceans. The Great Barrier reef really is a natural wonder and may not always be around, so if you love the ocean, an overnight or multi day reef trip is a must do Cairns activity. The only difficult decision is which boat to choose!
How much time do you need to leave after diving before flying?
You can fly to Cairns then dive the Great Barrier reef the next day, but PADI standards recommend leaving at least 24 hours between your last dive and flying.
Do you have to be able to swim to snorkel in Cairns?
Snorkeling in Cairns is great for beginners, but you should be able to swim a little or at the very least tread water. Snorkeling is a great way to build up your confidence and can help make you more comfortable in open water using the flotation devices provided.
Is all scuba diving equipment included in Cairns liveaboard boats?
Absolutely, all equipment is included on your overnight reef trip. You need just bring your swimsuit and a small overnight bag and you’re set!
What is Great Barrier reef tax?
Reef tax or EMC (Environmental Management Charge) goes to the Australian government for the preservation of the Great Barrier reef. Operators will collect this as you arrive on board so be sure to have
yours ready.
Do you provide stinger suits on overnight boats from Cairns?
Stinger suits are available, often included but sometimes for a small additional rental fee. The jellyfish season in the Great Barrier reef runs from November-May. Outside of these dates you do not need stinger suits.
Can I hire prescription goggles on a Great Barrier reef trip?
Absolutely, there are often prescription goggles available on these overnight/liveaboard reef trips, but stocks are limited and some of our operators only include minus prescriptions.
