What to do in Cairns when it's raining

‘Slow as a wet week’ was a phrase often heard in many household throughout Australia. The implication was, of course, that a wet week drags on and is the most boring time imaginable. Cairns is surrounded by rainforest – and yes, that means Cairns and rain are no strangers – but that doesn’t mean your Tropical Queensland holiday will be a wash out if it rains.
How about you treat yourself by indulging in the Food & Wine Tour and sample the delights of a tropical cuisine experience. Macadamias are Australian native nuts that are the envy of the world. You will visit a macadamia plantation and find out more about this wonderful local food. If you are a seafood fan, how does a lunch of delectable morsels from the local waters sound? How about some wine made from tropical fruits? The tour has that covered too - plus a look at a coffee plantation and tastings at a cheese factory. Remember, all this can be seen and experienced while surrounded by lush beautiful rainforests and lakes.

Then there is the Flames of the Forest tour, which provides a unique dining adventure. Experience the rainforest by night and enjoy a sumptuous meal at the same time. Relax in a setting that seems a million miles away from the cares of the world but in reality is only 10 minutes from Port Douglas. This tour comes in two flavours – a romantic getaway version for two, or an extravaganza of Aboriginal culture. Local indigenous people will regale you with tales of growing up in rainforest country and provide music while you enjoy a delicious meal of tropical food and wines.
If you are going to get damp if you go outside, why not get wet while enjoying some white water fun? The Rafting on the Barron River tour is a fun adventure that will be sure to get you wet, but exhilarated. Your safety is taken care of by experienced guides and all equipment is provided. You just need to show up in clothing that can get wet (including suitable shoes) and enjoy the raft ride of a lifetime.
If you really want to pump it up, you can try bungy jumping and/or the Minjin Jungle Swing at A.J. Hackett’s purpose built tower set in beautiful rainforest just outside Cairns. The bungy jump is 50m high and offers many jumping styles. If you want, you can dip into the pond at the bottom because “hey you’re already wet anyway”! If you don’t fancy the bungy, you can try the Minjin Jungle swing. The swing allows multiple people to ride at once and you get to hurtle through the forest canopy, starting at a height of 45m. If you are not the thrill seeker in your group, you can always watch the others from one of the four viewing decks. The bungy and the swing can be taken as individual activities or combined in the Big Day Out package
So, if you have a wet week in Cairns, it will be anything but slow.
