Description
Discover the fascinating history and culture of the region’s Aborigines on an exclusive day tour that takes you from Cairns or Port Douglas to the land of the Aborigines, courtesy of Adventure North and The Bama Way. Journey down one of the most stunning coastal drives in Australia as you travel to Cooya Beach or Kuku Kuku, which lies North of Port Douglas. This very special area is traditionally used by the Kuku Yalanji people as fishing grounds.
The coastal region is home to three visually stunning ecosystems, namely beach, coastal reef and mangroves. You will meet one of the Kubirri Warra brothers from Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Tours, and he will school you in spear throwing and other hunting strategies traditionally practiced by the Aborigines. Join the brothers on a walk through their traditional homeland as you discover how to hunt for and track fish, mussels and mud crabs in the mangroves. Search for and sample bush tucker and traditional bush medicines
Sample tea, coffee and home-made damper, and tuck in to meals made out of your own catches on the balcony of the family’s property, which offers spectacular views of the ocean. The brothers will teach you plenty about various Aboriginal artifacts and how they are used. Be treated to a Welcome to Country Ceremony, conducted by Aboriginal people who will welcome you culturally onto their land. Experience a fascinating ceremony of spiritual cleansing to ensure you have a wonderful experience while on the land of the Kuku Yalanji people.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at the Mossman Gorge Centre. Here you will be greeted with a traditional smoking ceremony conducted by Aboriginal people with specialised cultural knowledge to welcome people to their land.
Wander into the lush rainforest of the World Heritage Daintree National Park, home of the Kuku Yalanji people. Here your guide will demonstrate traditional plant use and identify bush food and traditions. This walk takes you through the mesmerising rainforest while your guide provides an enchanting narrative of the rich flora, fauna and diverse ecosystem. This is an easy walk across boardwalks, tracks and bridges that protect the delicate ecosystem. You will also get to view spectacular mountain ranges and waterfalls.
