Brett's outback tasting adventures is a deliciously tropical food and wine tasting tour showing you the best the Atherton Tablelands has to offer.
Your tour begins at Sunset Ridge Farm, a family owned and run business with a love of native plants and fruits. The farm is located on the top of a mountain range over looking lush green hills, vibrant rainforest and looks over a large area of the Tablelands with spectacular views. Here the crew grow a number of varieties of native fruits, the top two being, Davidson Plum and Lemon Aspen Both which are indigenous to the rainforests of North Queensland. Here you will get to taste a selection of homemade breakfast foods made from these fruits.
Next up you will head to the outskirts of Malanda, a historic rural town, where you will visit a private property to sample Gallo Cheeses and their condiments made from locally grown Davidson plum, lemon aspen, lillypilly and rainforest tamarind in traditional recipes full of the unique tastes of Australian rainforest fruits. You also get to taste a native fruit cocktail and try Queensland red or white wine ad you overlook the Johnston River.
Then you will head to the Australian Platypus Park, home to a thriving population of playtpus. They can be found in a spring fed pond surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Take a walk to see them then sit down to enjoy handcrafted smoked products, combined with a blend of local Australian native herbs and spices. These tasty include Crocodile, Red Claw (Yabby) and Kangaroo with fresh local salads topped off with a boutique beer, Dragon Fruit cider and Lemon Myrtle tea.
You will then head to the village of Atherton to visit a dairy farm spread over acres of rich volcanic soil and offering a selection of handcrafted chocolates and a gourmet cheese factory. Here you can purchase the delightful cheeses and try irresistible filled chocolates whilst gazing out over the landscape.
Then it is onwards for a tasting and shopping treat at ‘The Humpy’ for freshly harvested Atherton Tablelands produce straight from the growers. Offering everything from vegetables to tropical fruits and a variety of nuts, dried fruits jams and sauces. With organic and gluten free produce also available. Taste seasonal fruits and lots of different flavours of hot local peanuts and macadamia nuts. With plenty of time to peruse the quirky grocery store you can purchase tasty treats for the rest of your holiday.
