The Seasons

For most of the year the climate in Cairns is 'beautiful one day and perfect the next' with blue skies, warm weather and gentle breezes. The average temperature varies between 20 and 30 degrees celcius (68F to 90F) all year round however there are two distinct seasons, the wet and the dry. The exact dates of these seasons change from year to year but in general, the wet season runs from November to April. Nearly all reef tours and adventure and sightseeing activities are available all year through both the wet and dry season although the vast majority of tourists visit Cairns and the great barrier reef between May and October.

Wet Season

• November - April (Australian Summer)

• Average maximum temperature = 31C (88F)

• Average minimum temperature = 23C (73F)

• Average monthly rainfall = 300mm (11 inches)

• Average humidity = 65%

• Stinger Season. The dangerous Box Jelly Fish are coastal dwellers and are not found on the reef and thus don't pose a threat to reef divers. Other non dangerous jelly fish can be found on the reef however stinger suits (lycra tops) are made available by most reef operators and offer suitable protection.

Dry Season

•  May - October (Australian Summer)

• Average maximum temperature = 27C (81F)

• Average minimum temperature = 18C (65F)

• Average monthly rainfall = 45mm (2 inches)

• Average humidity = 55%
